Review #3: Vacation, Alienation, Japanimation, Manga, Conga, Naked Lunch, Hawaiian Punch, Fruit Juice. FOOLY COOLY!
Time for another edition of Friday Reviews! In this installment I’ll be reviewing FLCL! I’ll be taking Kat’s advice and getting/writing a small synopsis about the show before-hand so people can read a little bit into the format and direction of the show. Here is the direct quote from Wikipedia on the anime;
“FLCL revolves around Naota. His life is interrupted by the arrival of Haruko Haruhara, who bursts on the scene by running Naota over with her Vespa scooter, then giving him CPR and hitting him on the head with a blue vintage Rickenbacker 4001 left-handed electric bass guitar. Later, Naota is shocked to find Haruko working in his house as a live-in maid.
Since then, Giant Robots from Medical Meccanica have been coming out of Naota’s head and cause more problems for Naota and Haruko. Haruko is using Naota for her search for the Pirate King, Atomsk, which puts her at odds with Medical Meccanica, the monolithic industrial corporation. At the same time, Naota is being watched by Commander Amarao, who believes that Medical Meccanica is out to conquer the galaxy. The combination of circumstances gets Naota involved in a three-way battle between Haruko, Amarao and Medical Meccanica.”
Now, this anime get’s a lot of mixed reviews as being ridiculously amazing to being complete and utter shit. I’m on on the scale around really good show. This anime scores some points with me because it A) Makes me laugh, and B) Has robots which are 2 of my 5 prerequisites for an anime I’ll watch. This anime has one of the oddest back stories as well, mainly the fact that it was actually supposed to be an OVA for an anime that never existed but possibly was planned.
As far as stories go, you will have one hell of a time trying to make out the story because (more than likely) it seems like the episodes are missing vital information you think you missed in the last episode…but nothing is there! That’s mainly because this anime is very, very random and confusing at times but still very watchable. From start to finish this anime has it all: violence, hot girls, robots, romance, action, hot girls, baseball, cats, intrigue, suspense, hot girls, insane plot twists and turns and the best part of all; hot girls.
For a six episode series(?) it’s a very nice watch, not long but it makes you want more when it’s done. Every episodes is a bit different from the last one and there is some sort of a story in there. Personally I added it to my collection because I liked it and thought it was very funny, and the kind of humor found in FLCL is my kind of humor, but not everyone feels that way about this series. This anime is really not a “Rated E for everyone” kind of anime: it’s good and has it’s moments, but that’s just my opinion on this.
And here’s the score for this weeks anime:
Buy it: Only if you’re a fan and you want to add this to your collection.
Rent it/Borrow it: Highly suggested if your not sure if this anime is your kind of anime.
I’ll see you all Monday!
